When using 15.3, the system ran very smoothly.  No system hangs.  Now the system hangs -- drive light on constantly -- for minutes at a time.  I finally had to remove Deepin and reinstall another distro.  Anyone else having this problem?

Maybe that's where it hung, too.  Too bad -- Chrome is central to my computing.

I wouldn't recommend that.
A computer magazine tested their ram usage some time ago and firefox needs even more.
I use opera and don't have ram problems but it's based on chromium so most likely it won't fix your problem.
Try some lightweight browsers like otter browser, midori or epiphany.
And keep in mind that a computer with 2 gigabytes of ram will never work well with 50 tabs open ;)
Swap could also fix your problem.
Here is an article how to configure it: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-configure-virtual-memory-swap-file-on-a-vps
It's written for their virtual servers but it should work on linux computers too.
