Deepin Linux Shines at FLISOL Quito 2024: A Journey of Discovery and Community Building 🐧

On June 22nd, the Yachay Tech Free Software Club embarked on a 5.5-hour journey from the university campus to Quito for FLISOL, a renowned Latin American Free Software Install Fest. Our mission: to introduce attendees to Deepin Linux, an innovative and user-friendly operating system, and ignite their passion for open-source technology. ✨

Deepin Unveiled: Our dedicated team captivated the audience with an in-depth presentation on Deepin Linux. We explored its evolution from Hiweed Linux, highlighting its commitment to user-friendliness, aesthetics, and extensive applications through the Deepin Store. Live demonstrations on club members' laptops allowed attendees to experience Deepin's unique charm firsthand. 💻

Privacy and Empowerment: We delved into the power dynamics between users and proprietary operating systems, emphasizing how Deepin Linux empowers users with control over their digital lives and protects their privacy. 🛡️ We sparked critical reflection on the importance of choosing an operating system that respects digital rights and avoids the pitfalls of planned obsolescence.

The Kichwa Connection: Our presentation concluded with an introduction to the exciting Deepin translation project into Kichwa, an indigenous language of Ecuador. This initiative resonated deeply with many attendees, showcasing Deepin's commitment to inclusivity and cultural preservation.

Survey Insights: To gather valuable feedback, we conducted a survey among 58 participants. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with a majority expressing strong interest in Deepin and its features, particularly its wide range of pre-installed applications, stability, security, and active community support. 👍 We also learned about the desire for more games, productivity tools, Adobe alternatives, and video editing software – valuable insights to guide Deepin's future development. 🎮💼🎨🎥

Building a Vibrant Community: FLISOL was a networking bonanza! We established meaningful connections with organizations and individuals eager to collaborate on Deepin-based projects. Notable encounters included Ola Bini and CAD, focused on privacy-conscious apps; Gina Brito, a prominent Linux advocate and former presidential communications secretary; and Pedro Franco, CEO of the Kichwa Institute, who expressed enthusiasm for integrating Deepin into his cybersecurity products. 🤝

The Path Forward: Inspired by FLISOL's success, we are excited about the future of Deepin Linux in Ecuador. We plan to organize workshops and events, both online and in-person, to empower new and existing users. Additionally, we'll leverage platforms like TikTok to share educational content, success stories, tutorials, and tips, further expanding Deepin's reach. 📱
